My lessoon learned after a year leading product designer team
In early January 2023, I got a new opportunity to oversee the product designer Buyer team. Initially, it took me by surprise because I had never dealt with managing a team before, not even during my school days. However, after careful consideration, I accepted the opportunity because I felt it was a good chance for me to learn something new — managing a team.
At first, it felt quite challenging. I felt entirely responsible for the designers in my team, and there seemed to be so much to do and improve in terms of managing systems, task assignments, design processes, etc. After a ton of iterations, I finally found the right way to manage my workload as a supervisor and also as an individual contributor. After a year in this role, here are four important things that I find crucial and have learned.
Listening Carefully is Essential 🎧
In my role as a team supervisor, effective communication is at the core of what I do — negotiating, leading discussions, presenting ideas, and so on. Taking on the responsibility of supervising a team has taught me the importance of attentive listening.
This ensures accurate information and minimizes misunderstandings. By honing my listening skills, I swiftly grasp my team’s insights, enabling me to plan for our collective future more effectively.Strategic Planning is the Key to Success 🗓
Beyond being a good listener, I recognize the key role of meticulous planning in effective teamwork. After establishing strong communication, I put effort into crafting detailed plans. This clarity aids the team’s understanding, allowing us to foresee potential challenges and advantages.
Encouraging open discussions during the planning phase sparks creativity and fosters collaboration, while also ensuring we’re all aligned toward our shared goals. We All Share Wins and Setbacks Moments 🧑🤝🧑
Initially, I believed that as a supervisor, the team’s success or failure rested solely on my shoulders. However, I’ve come to understand that, as a team, we share both the wins and setbacks moments.
Celebrating achievements together and facing challenges as a unified front has reshaped my perspective. This collective responsibility promotes a culture of learning from mistakes, enabling us to rise resiliently, armed with fresh strategies to achieve our goals.Embracing a Growth Mindset 🚀
Navigating the diverse responsibilities of a supervisor, from task delegation to one-on-one sessions, I’ve realized the importance of continuous learning. Introducing new initiatives together, I’ve found that early and regular evaluations are crucial. Waiting too long to assess progress can make it harder to fix mistakes.
Cultivating a growth mindset involves frequent reflections, both individually and collectively as a team, ensuring adaptability and sustained improvement.
As this chapter concludes, I’m grateful for the lessons learned, the growth experienced, and the shared victories that have defined this transformative year. Here’s to more learning, collaboration, and success in the chapters yet to unfold✨
