Why Is Empathy Important in Everyday Life? — A Designer Perspective
After four years as a designer—collaborating, leading, and navigating the ups and downs of the creative world—I’ve realized one thing: empathy isn’t just a design skill, it’s a life skill. From teamwork to everyday interactions, it shapes how we connect, solve problems, and create impact. Here’s my take on why empathy matters beyond the screen

From teamwork to everyday interactions, it shapes how we connect, solve problems, and create impact. Here’s my take on why empathy matters beyond the screen
The more I reflect on my interactions, the clearer it becomes: most conflicts or disagreements don’t arise because people want to argue, but because we struggle to understand each other’s perspectives. Without empathy, conversations turn awkward, distant, or even hurtful, making it harder to find common ground and resolve issues peacefully.
As designers, we’re all familiar with terms like “empathy” or “empathize,” right? It’s the secret sauce that makes our work meaningful. Before diving into a project, we take time to understand our users’ needs, frustrations, and desires. But for me, empathy has evolved into something much larger than just a design tool. It’s become a mirror for self-reflection — making me ask myself,
Am I truly practicing empathy, not just as a designer, but as a human being?
One of my biggest challenges with empathy came when I stepped into my first leadership role at Sinbad, leading the product design buyer team. I was terrified — I’d never been a leader before. But I saw it as the perfect opportunity to grow. It pushed me to embrace empathy, not just as a tool for collaboration but as a way to understand and connect with my team truly. My goal was to create a work environment that felt positive and supportive for everyone. It was hard, but it taught me just how powerful empathy can be when we commit to practicing it fully. Let me explain why empathy is so important and how I applied it.
How I Applied Empathy
In my first month as a supervisor, I wanted to get to know my team better. So, I created a “self-reflection form” for them to share their strengths, weaknesses, and goals. This wasn’t a quick, “fill this out in 5 minutes” thing. Nope. I wanted them to really think about it. After they filled it out, I scheduled one-on-one sessions to go over their responses and learn more about their individual perspectives, challenges, and ambitions.
This exercise gave me a deeper insight into each designer, and, in the end, it helped create a stronger, more positive team culture (it took time, but totally worth it!). If I hadn’t taken the time to really understand each team member, there’s no way we would’ve had the amazing working environment we created — or hit our OKRs. Yep, empathy had a big impact😆
Practical Ways to Cultivate Empathy in Daily Life
Empathy is more than a skill — it’s a practice that we can get better at every day. Here are a few ways to start:
LISTEN up and hold back judgments. Even if you don’t agree, take a moment to understand where the other person is coming from.
Ask questions and show GENUINE curiosity. Empathy often starts with a simple “Why do you feel that way?”
PAUSE before reacting. Taking a pause helps you to respond with care and consideration.
By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you can make empathy a natural part of your personal and professional life.
Empathy as a Path to Self-Awareness and Growth
Empathy plays a huge role in personal growth, too. It helps us become more aware of our own biases and assumptions. The more I practiced empathy, the more I realized the root causes of my own reactions and judgments. It was eye-opening! It’s amazing how much our thoughts and beliefs shape the way we act. Do you ever find yourself reacting without thinking?🤨
Empathy Beyond the Workplace
Empathy isn’t just for work — it’s a game-changer in life. The wise ones are the people who know how to apply empathy in every situation. They can read a room, listen without interrupting, and create space for others to express themselves. Empathy makes us more connected, caring, and aware of the world around us.
It sounds easy, but in practice? Not so much. It takes effort to put our egos aside and listen to others. But if we ignore empathy, we risk becoming self-centered, disconnected, and numb to the struggles of those around us.
